What You Will Learn

Thunder Ranch’s Defensive Handgun Red Dot course is designed for shooters looking to optimize their use of Red Dot Sights (RDS) on handguns. RDS facilitates rapid target acquisition, ease of use for those with changing eyesight, and to extend effective shooting distances.


Throughout the course, students will engage targets from 0 to 100 yards, adapting to various lighting conditions and environmental challenges. Training includes handling sight failures, single-hand manipulation, and utilizing RDS in scenarios.


This course offers a comprehensive approach to using Red Dot Sights, enhancing your shooting skills and confidence.




 

What to Bring

  • Handgun with Quality Red Dot Sight

    • Recommended: Trijicon RMR/RSO, Leupold Delta Point Pro, AimPoint ACRO, Holosun etc.

    • Pistol should have visible back-up iron sights, mounted in front of, or behind the RDS

  • Holster

    • Holster capable of holding the pistol and RDS [as well as weapon light if applicable]

  • 4-6 magazines (or more)

  • Frangible ammunition (1000 – 1200 rounds recommended)

  • Eye protection (at least one set of clear lenses)

  • Hearing protection

  • Knee and elbow pads

  • Handheld tactical-style flashlight (button on the tailcap)

    • Either pistol mounted [i.e. Surefire X300U] and/or handheld.

  • Hat with a brim

  • Magazine pouch

  • Range bag

  • Sunscreen

  • Rain gear

  • Durable footwear

  • Materials for note-taking

  • Cleaning gear

  • Special tools (e.g., Torx, hex)

  • Spare batteries for RDS and flashlight/weaponlight.

  • Manuals for firearm, optics, etc.

    • RDS manual and tools for mounting and adjusting the sight.


Ammunition Requirements

  • Frangible ammunition (1000 – 1200 rounds recommended)

  • No green tips, magnums, tracers.

  • No steel core, .338 caliber, or zip guns.


Travel Reminder

When traveling with suppressors and short-barreled rifles (SBRs), ensure you carry the appropriate documentation at all times, especially in case of police stops.
