Who We Are

Throughout the years our goal has always been consistent; to be a premier training facility dedicated to providing top-notch firearms and tactical training. Founded by Clint Smith, a Marine Corps veteran with extensive experience in law enforcement and firearms instruction, Thunder Ranch has been at the forefront of innovative training since its inception.

Our facility offers a wide range of courses designed for both beginners and seasoned professionals. We specialize in Urban Rifle, Shotgun, Precision Rifle, and various handgun formats, ensuring that our students receive comprehensive and practical training. Our unique range designs and cutting-edge training programs set us apart as a leader in the industry.

Heidi Smith, brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our team. As an EMT, a Lake County Sheriff’s Reserve Deputy, and a TEMS medic, Heidi has played a crucial role in developing our Trauma Block and other critical training components. Her dedication to safety and responsible firearm ownership is reflected in every aspect of our curriculum.

1975

Clint Smith’s Transition to Civilian Training

 

Clint Smith, a Marine Corps veteran with two infantry and Combined Action Platoon tours in Vietnam, transitioned to civilian training. He served seven years as a police officer, leading the Firearms Training Division and working as a S.W.A.T. member and precision rifleman.

Clint left law enforcement to join the American Pistol Institute as Operations Officer, where he became the Dean of Instruction and was instrumental in developing the range and curriculum for A.P.I.

Founding of International Training Consultants, Inc.

 

Clint Smith founded International Training Consultants, Inc., a nationally recognized mobile training program. This innovative program specializes in Urban Rifle, Shotgun, Precision Rifle, and various handgun formats, providing cutting-edge training across the country.

1986

Director of Training at Heckler & Koch, Inc.

 

Clint Smith became the Director of Training for Heckler & Koch, Inc. During his tenure, he developed and taught advanced courses in both fully automatic weapons and conventional weapons systems, contributing to the company’s training programs with his expertise.

Founding of The Personal Safety Institute

 

Heidi took her first handgun course and soon after obtained her concealed carry permit. After attending several handgun and rifle courses, she and her mother recognized a need for an all-female format to introduce women to shooting and using firearms.

This realization led to the creation of The Personal Safety Institute, a non-profit organization and one of the first all-female firearms training teams on the West Coast, dedicated to teaching women the safe and responsible ownership of firearms.

Growth of The Personal Safety Institute

 

The Personal Safety Institute (PSI) operated and trained hundreds of women for seven years during the 1990s. During this time, Heidi attended the WA State Criminal Justice Association and became a WA State firearms instructor. In 1992, Heidi became an adjunct instructor for International Training Consultants (ITC).

Opening of Thunder Ranch®, Inc.

 

Clint Smith opened Thunder Ranch®, Inc., showcasing innovative training programs and unique range designs and functions, unprecedented in a single facility. Clint also became a contributor to American Handgunner, American Cop, GUNS, and SWAT magazines, publishing numerous articles in national and international publications. Thunder Ranch was successfully relocated to Oregon.

Heidi Joins Thunder Ranch

 

The Personal Safety Institute was the parent company to Thunder Ranch, Inc. In 1995, Heidi was hired as an instructor for Thunder Ranch Texas. In 1998, she married Clint Smith and became the Operations Officer for Thunder Ranch.

Advancements in Emergency Medical Training and Law Enforcement

 

Heidi became an EMT for the State of Oregon and helped create the current Trauma Block taught at Thunder Ranch. Starting in 2010, she was sworn in as a Lake County Sheriff’s Reserve Deputy and is currently a TEMS medic for the department.
